Calcium gets almost all the attention in bone health discussions. But the mineral that makes up the second largest proportion of bone — phosphorus — is rarely mentioned. What Phosphorus Does in Bone
Approximately 85% of the body’s phosphorus is found in bone and teeth, where it combines with calcium to form hydroxyapatite — the crystalline mineral that gives bone its hardness and density. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus in bone is approximately 2:1 by weight. Both minerals are essential; neither works well without adequate levels of the other.

Over time, chronically elevated PTH accelerates bone resorption.

How Much Phosphorus Do You Need?

The Tolerable Upper Intake Level is 4,000 mg per day for adults under 70, and 3,000 mg for adults over 70. Exceeding this consistently — primarily through very high supplement intake rather than food — is associated with adverse effects on calcium metabolism and bone.
